I had a nice surprise from the Cal Poly Disabilities Resource Center–an award for “outstanding contributions to students with disabilities”–that I received at their annual awards banquet today. This is actually the third time I’ve been given the award–the previous times were 1991 and 1994–but it always means a great deal to me.

I don’t think I do anything particularly special to merit this recognition, but having a lot of family members with dyslexia and a daughter with autism, I guess I try to treat my students with disabilities the way I would want my family to be treated.

The best thing about the DRC program is hearing about the students who won the annual stipend awards. What an outstanding group of young people! It was nice to see that many of their families were able to attend as well. It was just a really warm event, and it was an honor to be there.

Being a student with a reading comprehension disability found Dr.Freberg to be very accomodating when it comes to test taking. I cannot tell you how many times the class hour will be over and I am still working on my exam. Dr.Freberg does not make a fuss about my slowness and instead invites me to finish in her office hours. She is very concerned about her students and understands that there are limitations.
I have the opportunity to have her twice in one quarter and I even she how understanding she is to other students in her wide range of classes. Having a disability I feel is harder to voice in college becasue at times it is looked down apon like it is just a phase some one should have grown out of in middle school. School should be about the learning and the desire to acheive and when one can help a student realize that they have done a great thing. I am glad that her efforts are being acknowledged.
