Today is the one-year anniversary of the start of my Jenny Craig diet. I really hadn’t intended to sign up–although I needed it–but did so to support my daughter Karen’s post shot-putting retrofit. After a stellar ten-year career in track and field, including a 9th place finish in the 2004 Olympic trials, Karen wanted to look more like a grad student and less like a shot-putter. We had many laughs on the phone, along the lines of “did you see how small today’s pancake breakfast was?”

After about a month of this, Mr. F decided to join us. He was walking by the dinner table and spotted my lemon cupcake. “You get DESSERT on this?” So, one year later, Karen is down 70 pounds, Mr. F is down over 90, and I’m down 75. True, we’re the kind of people that get an asterisk (Barry Bonds is not alone) and the statement “results not typical.” But if you’re looking for an easy way to shed pounds, this is it. Buy food, microwave food, eat food, lose weight. No glucose-depleting decisions to make.

Here is my weight chart from the Jenny Craig site:

I’m still a little self-conscious about posting my “before” pictures–a silly bit of narcissism, I fear, but you can tell by the chart that even at 5’9″, I was a pretty big lady. But here’s what we looked like in May 2005:

Below is the picture of Mr. F. and me at yesterday’s Jenny weigh-in. We look a little bit different, no? We tease Mr. F about being a tad “manorexic.” He hasn’t weighed so little since he first signed up as a UCLA track and field athlete in 1970 (the USC gear is a whole different story–Mr. F has two Masters degrees from USC and Karen has their shot put record). So you’re wondering about the picture I use on my header? Well, that’s me in 2001, when I weighed about the same weight as I do now, so much of my weight gain was fairly recent. Yes, I do need a new picture–I’m a bit grayer now, but entitled to that at 55, I think.

So if you’re looking for an easy and healthy way to lose weight, even a whole bunch of weight, Jenny really does work. And no, we’re not gym rats either. We walk 2-3 miles a day to our local coffee shop, the absolutely fantastic Nautical Bean, but that’s about it.

Good luck, all of you intrepid dieters!

Congratulations are in order! Both for your diet stick-to-it-iveness and your blog nomination!

As far as Jenny Craig is concerned, I have seen nothing but positive remarks (and results) from their program. You are a living example of persistence and health. I have already blogged about my experience with post-baby weight loss and how difficult it is. My doctor has since told me (I have “insufficient veins” in both legs and will be getting procedures on both to remedy the situation come next month), that I need to cut back on the jogging — it used to be 2 miles five days a week. I have since gone to yoga twice a week, but I think it will be necessary to supplement with Pilates once I have the procedures and eventually cut out running all together.

Kudos to you and Mr. F for not becoming gym rats! I find my experience with exercise to be a daunting and necessary task — a drudgery of sorts. I hope to continue a more interesting and enjoyable trend of physical exercise for myself in the future. Congratulations on all your hard work!!!

The success of your family in Jenny Craig is remarkable! Congratulations! I was always wondering what the psychology world thought of the popular diets for today and what routes were safe, effective, and produced results substantial enough to work naturally with your lifestyle. Thank you for posting on the topic of dieting I think it is really helpful for some of your students that may be trying to tone up, shape up, or just burn fat!
