what I am reading today

Here are a few stories that I have found interesting and I hope you will, too!

Brain scans may be useful lie detectors

‘Scientists at Stanford University were able to tell when a person recognized a mug shot by reading their brain waves.’

Intensive harvests threaten Brazil Nut futures

(I don’t know how ‘Psychology’ this article is, but I love Brazil nuts!)

Researchers found that large rodents quickly ate the nuts, rather than caching them, when supplies were scarce. When supplies were plentiful, almost twice as many nuts were buried, increasing the chance of successful germination, the team added. The findings appear in the Journal of Tropical Ecology.

I just read the Brain Scan article recently and it is interesting to me that they are constantly doing research testing the many uses of “lie detectors” through brain activity. While its great research, I always see that the pitfalls are the inaccuracy of the test, since people can actually cheat the machine. I guess a practical application of the device is not going to happen soon, but the usage of the device brings up a host of ethical issues, doesnt it?
On another note, they did only test 16 subjects, so I wonder what the results would show with a larger sample size.
