I like to travel, but generally do not wander too far from my computer. It’s that work thing. So needless to say, I’m delighted to have the opportunity to travel to Athens next Friday, a place I’ve always wanted to see. Karen and I collaborated on a paper, so not only do I get to go, but my role is to be the Vanna White of powerpoints 🙂

Presenting in Greece--Its a tough job, but somebody has to do it.

As a special treat, daughter Kristin will be meeting us there, too. So I have to practice my walking, as Kristin’s version of touristing does not typically involve taking any type of transportation. Just as well, because I plan to sample the local cuisine, too.

In order to go, I had to make special arrangements to give my finals early. Typically, our deans frown on such things, as quarter systems provide little time for instruction as it is. My students don’t seem to mind clearing their desktops of at least one final, either.

So stay tuned for photos and reports 🙂

Who hoo! I don’t mind!! Greece doesn’t seem too bad of a gig! I hope one day to be able to give presentations internationally. I”m glad the dean agreed!

Well, it’s getting a lot more expensive for faculty to do this kind of travel–this one’s on me. But I think it’s important to get perspectives from other places, and meeting people in person is still different than reading their papers. You can ask questions more easily.

I am really happy to hear that you get to go to Athens. Hopefully you wont be too busy presenting and you will still have time to see the wonderful historical sites. If you get the chance you and Karen should visit the Acropolis and Partheneon, its pretty amazing!
By the way I’m pretty happy that I am getting one final out of the way so you don’t have to worry about me!

Sorry I meant to say Kristin not Karen!

Although travel expenses for these types of conferences are expensive, it is important that faculty stay up to date on the latest studies published so that they are better able to educate their students. For we all know that most textbooks are out of date as soon as they are published.

I think it’s so great that you’ll be able to go to Greece for this convention. That is the one of the most appealing places to travel to me, and it’s so exciting that you’ll be able to see it and experience the culture over there.
I’m really glad you got the dean’s approval to do this, and I definitely don’t mind taking the final early!
