Mother’s Day may be the most commercial of American holidays. Wikipedia says that Americans will spend $2.6 billion on flowers, $1.5 billion on “pampering gifts” and $68 million on greeting cards for the occasion. Americans are more likely to eat dinner at a restaurant on Mother’s Day than any other holiday.

That being said, the sentiment is rather nice, in my view. Families are important to our well-being, and having an excuse to get together, even if that means a phone call over thousands of miles, is meaningful.

We had our celebration yesterday, actually, as our routine is to eat thoughtfully six days per week and indulge on a Saturday lunch. And wow, did we indulge. Mr. F concocted a chocolate version of our family’s New York style cheesecake recipe, complete with a raspberry sauce, and it was outstanding. I’m not too sure what this did to my leptin/ghrelin levels, but whatever happened was worth it!

Forgive us, Jenny!

Happy Mother’s Day Dr. Freberg!!! I have seen your dedication to your children, with the homage paid them via internet photographs, as well as the real life ones I have seen in your office and the pride you take in your voice when you speak of them. You DESERVED that cheesecake (wow, did it look good, too!)

I regularly miss the biopsych class we had together and wish for a possible reunion in the near future. You continue to inspire me and I wish you many motherly blessings on top of your life blessings as well!

Although Mother’s Day may be a more overly commercialized holiday than any other in this country, it is certainly not over glorified. One day a year is the least that we can do for all that our mothers have sacrificed for us. I mean think of all the things they gave up on (for those of us who have not or never will be a mother – me). Our mothers sacrificed their free time, body image, and most importantly any sense of a routine lifestyle or a full nights sleep. I don’t think I’ll ever truly understand the commitment and discipline involved in the decision my mother made to have children! I am very thankful! =)

Billions of dollars on moms? Ya that seems right. Moms are the greatest women ever. They care for you, hold you for probably around two years straight all together, make you feel wonderful…just good for the soul. I would like to know if any researchers have ever done any studies with moms. For instance, have a subject get a PET scan to see which areas of the brain “fire up” when pictures and recordings, both visual and auditory are presented to them. Or maybe even bring the mothers in during the PET scan. I would think that all the areas of the brain associated with love would fire up but who knows. Happy belated mother’s day!
