” Many studies support the assertion that moderate drinking is beneficial when it comes to cardiovascular health, and for the first time scientists have discovered that a well-known molecule, called Notch, may be behind alcohol’s protective effects. Down the road, this finding could help scientists create a new treatment for heart disease that mimics the beneficial influence of modest alcohol consumption.”

“As the number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders continues to increase, the one thing that won’t change is the need for those children to develop social skills. Statistics show that if these students are able to communicate effectively, they can achieve success in the classroom, and later, in the workplace. In addition to the challenges facing each individual student, educators find themselves facing dwindling resources.”

“Boys were more likely to receive a diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) than girls, even when symptoms were equally severe, according to researchers at the universities of Exeter and Bristol.”

“TOO MUCH texting and spending time on Facebook is leading kids into a life of sex, drugs, drinking and mental health problems.A study released at the American Public Health Association’s annual meeting tested students on their texting and social networking habits and also tested for risky behaviour.”

I found the “WHY alcohol benefits the heart” article very interesting. Particularly because I had an uncle who died of an enlarged heart in his 40’s. However, doctors attributed his death to excess alcohol consumption and pain killers. I would like to follow the studies on Notch and how researchers are able to discover such interesting facts!

“New Approach Finds Success in Teaching Youth With Autism” is an interesting article. My only question is: what is the new approach? Or did I miss it somewhere? I babysit and work one-on-one with a child with autism spectrum at home. This is something that I would like to look closer at. His family is very close to our family and they are having trouble finding someone that can adequately fit his needs in the classroom.

“teaching youth with autism”
I thought this article was very interesting. I believe that it is incredibly important for breakthroughs in dealing with autistic children, because then it is easier for them to function in the real world. Lately there seems to have been more and more progressive changes in education that help the autistic person. For example, I saw a television program about an autistic child, and at his school he took special classes where he would be taught and practicing some basic, but very important, skills, such as calling 911.

The article “Why alcohol benefits the heart” seems to be teaching something that has been the opposite of what we have learned about alcohol in the past. Alcohol is usually taught to be dangerous because of its physical affects to the body when consumed in excess. The discovery made in this article lets us know that alcohol, if consumed moderately, can inhibit the growth of smooth muscle cells in blood vessels, leading to a lower risk of heart disease. This is an interesting discovery that would benefit most people.

I read “WHY alcohol benefits the heart” and I found the article very interesting. When I took developmental psych, I learned how moderate consumption of alcohol is actually linked to increased longevity, and ever since I wondered how this was possible. I had only ever heard of the negative side effects of alcohol on the body. The discovery of the correlation between the presence of Notch and heart disease has answered some of my questions. I also admire the fact that the researchers can look beyond what a certain substance is knowingly capable of, and discover other, and in this case more positive capabilities. Hopefully further research will lead to more monumental discoveries, and I can’t wait to hear about them!

I read “A problem diagnosing autism” and found the article interesting, yet left me concerned. The article made me wonder how many boys are diagnosed with autism, but don’t actually have it and how many girls are autistic but never get diagnosed nor properly helped. If boys who are just having a little trouble developing at the average pace, but are not autistic, being diagnosed with autism could just be acting as a label and have a negative effect. When you label someone as mentally challenged, or different in any way, they sometimes conform to that label when they could have potentially grown out of it. Maybe doctors should wait until a certain age until they stamp on a diagnoses.
