It’s that time again–time for the annual convention of the Association for Psychological Science (APS). This year’s convention is very conveniently located for us just a few hours north in San Francisco.

Last year, we had some fun with a session on Psychology blogging. This year, I have a group of students presenting a poster on loneliness and the use of social media. We’re scheduled for the Sunday 10am session, so if you’re at the convention, stop on by and say hello.

There is always so much to see at APS. Nancy Kanwisher is giving the Keynote address, “The Specialized Brain.” Paul Ekman and Robert Levenson are presenting “Prime Time Psychology: Science is the Story in ‘Lie to Me.'”

I’ll also be spending some time at the Cengage booth talking to people who teach biopsych, so if you’re in the neighborhood, stop by. We made up some mousepads with the glowfish from Chapter 5 of Discovering Biological Psychology, so you’re welcome to pick one up.

I just saw on John Cacioppo’s Twitter that his plane is 6 hours late…hope he makes it! We’re looking forward to his Psychology as a Hub Science II presentation, but it’s on Sunday, so one hopes the airlines aren’t that awful!

This is something I would love to attend and those mousepads are so cool. Do you know where it will be held next year?

Avery, I think APS will be in Boston next year–bit of a trip, but worth it. My students are quite interested in WPA–it will be in Cabo San Lucas!

That sounds like such a great convention. I’ve seen the show ‘Lie to Me’ and loved it, and I’m sure it will be very interesting to hear Paul Ekman speak in person. I would love to go to the next convention in Boston, but Cabo would be great too!

After seeing the show ‘Lie to Me’ for the first time i was really fascinated with all the “reading emotions on people’s faces” stuff! I have read about Paul Ekman some and even took a few of his online quizzes to see how well I can read facial expressions. I would love to hear more about him and even learn how to become better at what he’s discovered. really cool stuff!

Paul Ekman was funny. You could tell he didn’t like the show’s writers messing with his science (they did apparently take some poetic license!) It was definitely a highlight of the conference, although I really enjoyed the speakers on epigenetics. Wow!

This looks like it would have been a lot of fun. I would also like to have heard about epigenetics. There is a huge future in that. I have not seen, “Lie to Me” because I can’t afford cable…haha but I will see if there are any mini clips on YouTube, because it sounds interesting.
