Mr. F and I braved today’s very weird (for San Luis Obispo) weather–it was 111 degrees today–to take our usual two walks a day. People did give us some incredulous looks. For our after-dinner walk, we take a circuit that often brings us by a large, colorful, and interesting trailer parked in a nearby neighborhood. Tonight, the trailer was actually open, and we stopped by to see what it was all about.
The trailer belongs to the Luna Pro Team, an all-woman mountain bike, Xterra, and triathlon team. Zeph, the team mechanic, was kind enough to show us around, give us a yearbook for 2008, and answer our many questions. The Luna Pro Team is ranked #1 in the world, so we thought it was cool that they were headquartered in our little town.
In addition to their success in cycling, the Luna Pro Team has raised more than $2 million for the Breast Cancer Fund. As parents of three daughters, we also appreciated their mission statement, which includes their goal “to inspire women to seek new challenges through outdoor activity.” Sounds good to us!
We’re hoping to see the Luna Team in action soon, and the closest race they attend is in Santa Ynez. It was fun to learn more about this team, their sport, and the causes they support. You never know what you’ll learn when you get out of your car and just walk around.
