Whether teaching or writing about psychology, I find that I do my best work after brainstorming sessions with faculty and students. My public relations daughter Karen may refer to these as ‘focus groups’ and my husband may call them “ideation sessions,” but whatever the name, the feedback and discussions are priceless.
I had the opportunity to visit the beautiful College of the Canyons , an impressive, growing and vibrant teaching institution nestled in the hills of Southern California. Nowhere is the art of teaching better understood than where teaching is the primary focus.
My former student, Tammy Mahan, is currently an assistant professor at COC. She arranged a terrific meeting with other faculty members and a very enthusiastic group of students. We ate cookies, talked about teaching psychology (and riding motorcycles!), and shared stories (what do alpha male chimps in the zoo do when they are being teased by people….you really don’t want to go there….)
Thank you for spending your time, energy and sharing your enthusiasm with me!
