Here is what i am reading today:

“Speaking at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in California, MIT professor Daniel Nocera claims to have created an artificial leaf, made from stable and inexpensive materials, which mimics nature’s photosynthesis process.”

“By combining sophisticated mathematical techniques more commonly used by spies instead of scientists with the power and versatility of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), a Penn neurologist has developed a new approach for studying the inner workings of the brain. A hidden pattern is encoded in the seemingly random order of things presented to a human subject, which the brain reveals when observed with fMRI. The research is published in the journal NeuroImage.”

“Just like snowflakes, no two people are alike, even if they’re identical twins according to new genetic research from The University of Western Ontario. Molecular geneticist Shiva Singh has been working with psychiatrist Dr. Richard O’Reilly to determine the genetic sequencing of schizophrenia using identical or monozygotic twins.”

“Women’s appreciation of their bodies is only indirectly connected to their body mass index (BMI), a common health measure of weight relative to height, according to recent research.”

“Newborn nerve cells may help heal the brain after a traumatic injury.

In a study in mice, blocking the birth of new neurons hindered the mice’s ability to learn and remember a water maze after a brain injury, researchers from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas report in the March 30 Journal of Neuroscience. The finding could help settle a debate about what new nerve cells do for the brain and may eventually change the way brain-injured patients are treated.”

Hello Dr. Freberg:

This article brought to my mind a documentary titled “Brain Injury Dialogues” (Richard Franklin) featured on KCET that explored living with brain injuries in profiles of people who have recovered from one. Cognitive rehab was identified as a necessary therapy for individuals with brain injuries.

I wonder if research has been done to explore whether cognitive rehab stimulates more neurogenesis.

My first comment was in response to “Hurray for new brain cell growth”. I didn’t notice that the comment option is at the bottom of all the articles — my bad!

Now I wish to comment on “Women view themselves as others see them:

Professor Tylka is not the first to address the importance and challenges of intuitive eating. I came upon a little gem titled “Intuitive Eating” written by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch in 1995.

Although it is unfortunate that many women learn to ignore (or deny) hunger and fullness early on in life, the authors of the book (and this article) suggest that one can relearn the body’s true cues. I was so motivated by the book, that I decided (after years of on and off dieting) that I will never go on a diet again. Unfortunately, although I am determined to honor my body by allowing it whatever amount of time it needs to restore a balanced metabolism, I have gained more weight than I am comfortable carrying around!

I have been paying attention to my experience and I have found that I am often afraid or simply unaccustomed to eating at certain times of the day and at other times of the day I eat out of habit (e.g., dinnertime is dinnertime even if I’m not hungry). I offer that identifying the existing patterns and replacing them with healthier ones is quite challenging.

Because I believe in intuitive eating and I am aware of the challenges that surface when trying to correct/change patterns, I have purposely raised my children differently. If they are not hungry they don’t have to eat and if they don’t want to eat everything on their plate, that is ok. I encourage them to tell me what they are craving and I put forth the effort to make those foods available for them. I hope this will set a different eating pattern for them.
